This exploration combines trekking through mountains with majestic views of Cordillera mountain ranges and four of the cleanest lakes of the Philippines — Lake Tabeo (highest lake in Philippines), Lake Incolos, Lake Ambulalakao, Lake Letep – ngapos.
We first venture into Mt. Timbak where the scenery features mostly villages and vegetable fields. At the summit, there are three crosses in what is dubbed as ‘mini-Calvary’. Seas of clouds form, and you can view Tabayoc, Panotoan, and Pulag (what the old timers dub as ‘Tapanpu’) and the range leading all the way to Mt. Ugo. Closer to the mountain, on the opposite side, you can see the Halsema highroad snaking through the town of Atok. Then we proceed to our base camp for the day, Lake Tabeo, before we tackle the 2nd hike of the day in Mt. Tabayoc. Trees are covered with moss in what is known to be one of the best-preserved virgin forests in the Philippines. Rare species, including those from the orchid genera Dendrochilum, filmy ferns, mosses, and forest trees abound in Tabayoc. The mountain is also the habitat of a number of bird species, many of which are endemic and endangered. Its main feature is being the second highest in Luzon, offering an alternate climb to Mt. Pulag; hikers will also find refreshment in its beautiful virgin forest. (Info from: pinoymountaineer.com)
After our trek to Mt. Tabayoc, we will find refuge at our campsite in Lake Tabeo. If weather permitting, this campsite will be under a blanket of starry night skies. The next day, we explore Kabayan’s Four Mystical Lakes before heading back to Baguio to end the exploration.
