One of the most urgent ecological issues today is that concerning mangroves. These “red forests” are considered to be effective natural barriers to storm surges and rising sea waters caused by global warming Not only that, mangrove forests are extremely productive ecosystems that provide shelter and food security to wide concentrations of life and biodiversity. However, they are under immense pressure, with these coastal wetlands receding and being subject to human exploitation.
This kayak daytrip will take you to paddle one of Bohol’s most important mangrove rivers and into one of the island’s oldest mangrove forests. You will be exploring mangrove tunnels under the canopy of a century old forest on the water, and as nighttime progresses under the ambient moonlight, you will get to witness one of nature’s most amazing sights– hundreds, sometimes thousands of fireflies in trees by the river, in a scene that could have come out of a fantasy movie.
